August 15, 2020 – India Independence Day
I would like to extend best wishes to members of the Canadian Indian community on the occasion of India Independence Day.
On August 15, 1947, India obtained its independence after years of British rule. On the eve of independence, Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru said “At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance.”
Independence Day is a joyous occasion, celebrated throughout India with flag raising ceremonies and the flying of thousands of brightly coloured kites in the evening sky – symbolizing freedom.
Toronto is a proud multicultural City that embraces a wide variety of cultures and faiths. Our City flourishes because of the diversity of people who have chosen to make Toronto their home. It is important to recognize each and every community that plays a part in enhancing Toronto’s social and cultural landscape.
As the Newcomer’s Advocate with the City of Toronto I strongly believe that we must work to together to promote togetherness. We must Respect our newcomer communities. We must Accept our newcomer communities. We should Celebrate our diversity and Embrace our different cultures and traditions, because we are all part of the human RACE.
