May 3rd is World Press Freedom Day – a time to talk about violations of press freedom.
It is a time to remember that, in many countries around the world, the media is censored; fined; suspended and closed down; while journalists, editors and publishers are harassed; attacked; kidnapped; and, even murdered. Just as importantly, it is a time to encourage and develop initiatives in support of press freedom and to assess the state of press freedom throughout the world.
May is Asian Heritage month – a month of festivities across Canada to highlight, honour and recognize the many and varied contributions Canadians of Asian heritage have made, and continue to make, to the cultural, economic and social fabric of Canada.
TORONTO, ON – Jim Karygiannis, City Councillor for Ward 39, Scarborough-Agincourt, stands against the motion passed by Toronto City Council on banning the importation on shark fin to Canada and will be launching an e-Petition for residents to campaign against the ban.
It is with a deep sense of reverence that I commemorate with you the 102nd Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.
Today, we pause to remember this atrocity which was perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire – the execution of 1.5 million Armenians.
TORONTO, ON – Jim Karygiannis, City Councillor for Ward 39, Scarborough-Agincourt, credits the thousands of Torontonians who wrote letters and expressed support for a tax on foreign home speculators, which will now be imposed by the Ontario Provincial Government.

TORONTO, ON – Jim Karygiannis, City Councillor for Ward 39, Scarborough-Agincourt, is expecting that the Provincial Government will impose a foreign home buyers tax in light of news that the province will query citizenship and residency for real estate purchases, starting on Monday.
