I would like to take this opportunity to extend my best wishes to members of the Canadian Grenadian community on the occasion of Grenadian Independence Day.
On February 7, 1974, Grenada was granted independence from the United Kingdom and became a sovereign nation – the first country in the Eastern Caribbean to attain this status. In the years immediately preceding independence, Grenada was known as an “Associated State of the United Kingdom”, which meant that it was responsible for its own internal affairs while the United Kingdom was responsible for defence and foreign affairs.
My thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who lost loved ones in the aftermath of the Taiwan TransAsia Airways plane crash on February 4, 2015. I pray that those who have been injured quickly recover and that all who are suffering have the strength they will need in the weeks and months to come.
