October 1, 2019 – Cyprus Independence Day
I would like to take this opportunity to extend my best wishes to members of the Canadian Cypriot community on the occasion of Cyprus Independence Day.
On February 19, 1959, Greece, Turkey, the United Kingdom and Cyprus were signatories to The Zurich and London Agreement, which formed the basis of the Cypriot Constitution. Following the signing of the accord, Cypriot President, Archbishop Makarios III said “Έλληνες Κύπριοι, νενικήκαμεν!” (“Greek Cypriots, we have won!”).
On August, 16, 1960, after seventy-eight years of British Rule, Cyprus attained independence from the United Kingdom and became known as the Republic of Cyprus.
Cypriots mark Independence Day on October 1st. On this day, military parades are held and schools and communities will host festivals in celebration of this special occasion.
Toronto is a proud multicultural City that embraces a wide variety of cultures and faiths. Our City flourishes because of the diversity of people who have chosen to make Toronto their home. It is important to recognize each and every community that plays a part in enhancing Toronto’s social and cultural landscape.
As the Newcomer’s Advocate with the City of Toronto I strongly believe that we must work to together to promote togetherness. We must Respect our newcomer communities. We must Accept our newcomer communities. We should Celebrate our diversity and Embrace our different cultures and traditions, because we are all part of the human RACE.
