August 24, 2019 – Ukrainian Independence Day
I would like to take this opportunity to extend my best wishes to members of the Canadian Ukrainian community on the occasion of Ukrainian Independence Day.
Ukrainian Independence Day was first celebrated on July 16th, 1991, to mark the first anniversary of the Declaration of State Sovereignty of Ukraine. After Ukraine ratified its official Declaration of Independence on August 24th 1991, Independence Day has since been recognized on August 24th of each year.
Independence Day is a public holiday in Ukraine and is marked by a number of festivities, including a large-scale military parade in the capital of Kiev. Ukrainians and members of the Ukrainian Diasporas worldwide also mark the occasion with festivals and flag-raising ceremonies.
Toronto is a proud multicultural City that embraces a wide variety of cultures and faiths. Our City flourishes because of the diversity of people who have chosen to make Toronto their home. It is important to recognize each and every community that plays a part in enhancing Toronto’s social and cultural landscape.
As the Newcomer’s Advocate with the City of Toronto I strongly believe that we must work to together to promote togetherness. We must Respect our newcomer communities. We must Accept our newcomer communities. We should Celebrate our diversity and Embrace our different cultures and traditions, because we are all part of the human RACE.
