May 1, 2019 – Asian Heritage Month
May is Asian Heritage month – a month of festivities across Canada to highlight, honour and recognize the many and varied contributions Canadians of Asian heritage have made, and continue to make, to the cultural, economic and social fabric of Canada.Asian Heritage Month was established in 2001 by now retired Liberal Senator Vivienne Poy, who was the first Canadian of Asian descent to be appointed to the Senate of Canada.
Through events – theatre and dance performances, conferences, workshops and story-telling – Canadians will have the opportunity to learn about and celebrate the diverse cultures of the Asian Diasporas in Canada.
Toronto is a proud multicultural City that embraces a wide variety of cultures and faiths. Our City flourishes because of the diversity of people who have chosen to make Toronto their home. It is important to recognize each and every community that plays a part in enhancing Toronto’s social and cultural landscape.
As the Newcomer’s Advocate with the City of Toronto I strongly believe that we must work to together to promote togetherness. We must Respect our newcomer communities. We must Accept our newcomer communities. We should Celebrate our diversity and Embrace our different cultures and traditions, because we are all part of the human RACE.
I encourage all Torontonians to take the time to learn about the history and experiences of Asian Canadians – the struggles, triumphs and their significant contributions that make Toronto and Canada a vibrant, multicultural society.
