February 15, 2019 – Serbian Statehood Day – Дан државности Србије
I would like to take this opportunity to extend my best wishes to members of the Canadian Serbian community on the occasion of Serbian National Day, otherwise known as Statehood Day.
Statehood Day is observed over the course of two days, starting on February 15th, and marks the anniversary of the First Serbian Uprising in 1804 and the adoption of the first Serbian Constitution in 1835.
The First Serbian Uprising, or the first stage of the Serbian Revolution, began in 1804 and lasted until 1813. After three centuries of rule, Serbia declared independence from the Ottoman Empire.
The violent struggle for independence led to a period of formalization, negotiations and the consolidation of political power. On February 15, 1835, The Sretenje Constitution was adopted, transforming Serbia from an Ottoman Province to a Constitutional Monarchy and a modern nation-state.
Toronto is a proud multicultural city that embraces a wide variety of cultures and faiths. Our city flourishes because of the diversity of people who have chosen to make Toronto their home. It is important to recognize each and every community that plays a part in enhancing Toronto’s social and cultural landscape.
As the Newcomer’s Advocate with the City of Toronto I strongly believe that we must work to together to promote togetherness. We must Respect our newcomer communities. We must Accept our newcomer communities. We should Celebrate our diversity and Embrace our different cultures and traditions, because we are all part of the human RACE.
