Women’s and children’s services at Scarborough Health Network’s Birchmount campus will close, the hospital’s board decided on Thursday, Jan. 24.

The board’s decision, endorsed by medical administrators earlier this month, is based on a report SHN officials say involved more than 300 people, including several experts.

Hundreds of doctors, nurses, other medical staff and residents of Agincourt oppose the closure.

Board members originally planned to decide the issue behind closed doors, but it was placed on the public agenda two hours before the meeting.

Scarborough-Agincourt Coun. Jim Karygiannis and Aris Babikian, the local MPP, had both asked for a decision until the report was released and their constituents, as well as staff of the hospital, could see and comment on it.

The hospital has since posted the report on its website, and CEO Elizabeth Buller will engage the community in a telephone town hall at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 28.

Reviews of other hospital services begin in February.
