Jim Karygiannis, a veteran politician known for speaking freely, has been voted chairperson of Scarborough Community Council.

The former Liberal MP received the only nomination for chair on Dec. 11, as the body reformed after shrinking from 10 to six members.

Having served one term as councillor, Karygiannis defeated Norm Kelly to be re-elected councillor for Ward 22 (Scarborough-Agincourt).

Ward 25 Councillor (Scarborough-Rouge Park) Jennifer McKelvie, elected in October after stepping down as chairperson of the Scarborough Community Renewal Organization, was the sole nomination for vice-chairperson.

Unless replaced, both will serve until the end of 2020.

Karygiannis is against adding unelected members to community councils, but does want them given more responsibilities, including on planning matters which currently get final approval at Toronto City Council.

“We’re looking to get more engagement,” he said after the meeting.

“Not everything has to come downtown.”
