August 8, 2018 – Rising incidents of Intolerance and Hate

Nathan Phillips Square is a place where the people of The Greater Toronto Area, all races, colours and religions gather to celebrate the rich multi-cultural nature of Toronto and Canada.

This weekend, a group of concerned citizens, young and old; workers; students; and, people of faith, who are deeply concerned about the rising tide of Islamophobia and racism in our City, will be gathering in Nathan Phillips Square.  They will be raising their voices, in a peaceful gathering, to oppose those who preach Islamophobia and racism.

The vast majority of Torontonians believe that welcoming newcomers from around the world and having them as our friends and neighbours enriches our communities and country.  Those, in our community, who express intolerance and hate, are the very small minority.

As the Advocate for Newcomers, I am dismayed to learn that those who are gather in a peaceful gathering of acceptance will be met by a group of people, who express views of intolerance and hate, will be rallying in Nathan Phillips Square.

Toronto is a proud multicultural city that embraces a wide variety of cultures and faiths.  Our city flourishes because of the diversity of people who have chosen to make Toronto their home. It is important to recognize each and every community that plays a part in enhancing Toronto’s social and cultural landscape.

I strongly believe that we must work to together to promote togetherness. We must Respect our newcomer communities. We must Accept our newcomer communities. We should Celebrate our diversity and Embrace our different cultures and traditions, because we are all part of the human RACE.

I trust that the two groups will remain peaceful.
