June 12, 2018 – Philippine Independence Day
I would like to take this opportunity to extend my best wishes to members of the Canadian Philippine community on the occasion of Philippine Independence Day or Araw ng Kalayaan.
The Philippine Declaration of Independence was proclaimed on June 12, 1898, when General Emilio Aguinaldo proclaimed sovereignty and independence of the Philippine Islands from Spain. The Declaration was not recognized by Spain or the United States, as the Spanish government had ceded the Philippines to the United States in the 1898 Treaty of Paris, in consideration for compensation for Spanish expenses and assets lost. However, it was not until 1946 that the Philippines achieved full independence.
I have worked closely with the Philippine community in the Greater Toronto Area on many important issues.
Toronto is a proud multicultural city that embraces a wide variety of cultures and faiths. Our city flourishes because of the diversity of people who have chosen to make Toronto their home. It is important to recognize each and every community that plays a part in enhancing Toronto’s social and cultural landscape.
As the Newcomer’s Advocate with the City of Toronto I strongly believe that we must work to together to promote togetherness. We must Respect our newcomer communities. We must Accept our newcomer communities. We should Celebrate our diversity and Embrace our different cultures and traditions, because we are all part of the human RACE.
