May 12, 2018 – Sichuan Earthquake remembered 10 years later
I join today the Chinese Community in Canada as we remember the earthquake victims of Sichuan in 2008.
I cannot but remember the hard work which the Chinese Canadians along with the rest of the community did in order to answer the call for help in the home country.
I was proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with them in all aspects of the fundraising drive, the call to protect their loved ones and for the Canadian Government to assist.
Visiting China a year later after the earthquake I truly seen the resiliency of the people in the region had put to re-build their lives.
My wife and I were moved when we met one of the survivors when we learnt that her birthday was the same as our youngest daughter’s.
Being in China today I can clearly see in the people’s faces that they have not forgotten the victims. I join people in their prayers for the victims and their families.
I ask that we pause for a moment and pray that such disasters will not happen again, however we have learned many things from such disasters on how we can be better prepared to overcome them.
