April 1, 2018 – Greek Cypriot National Day
I would like to take this opportunity to extend my best wishes to members of the Canadian Greek Cypriot community on the occasion of Greek Cypriot National Day.
Greek Cypriot National Day is celebrated on April 1st commemorating the anniversary of the liberation struggle of Greek Cypriots against British rule in 1955. It is also a time to remember the founding of Ethniki Organosis Kyprion Agoniston (EOKA) by Archbishop Makarios that fought for independence from Great Britain and unification between Cyprus and Greece. This is a very significant time in lives of all who celebrate.
Most schools also hold tributes and programs in their classes to educate the students about the history behind this special event in the country.
Toronto is a proud multicultural city that embraces a wide variety of cultures and faiths. Our city flourishes because of the diversity of people who have chosen to make Toronto their home. It is important to recognize each and every community that plays a part in enhancing Toronto’s social and cultural landscape.
As the Newcomer’s Advocate with the City of Toronto I strongly believe that we must work to together to promote togetherness. We must Respect our newcomer communities. We must Accept our newcomer communities. We should Celebrate our diversity and Embrace our different cultures and traditions, because we are all part of the human RACE.
