October 13, 2017 – Councillor Jim Karygiannis invites the public to COMMFFEST Global Community Film and Arts Festival
TORONTO, ON – Jim Karygiannis, City Councillor for Ward 39, Scarborough-Agincourt, invites members of the media and the public to the Opening Night and awards celebration kicking off the COMMFFEST Global Community Film and Arts Festival in Toronto.
The 12th Annual COMMFFEST leverages the power of great films promoting dialogue on global social and cultural issues. It is a unique platform for filmmakers of all ages, experiences levels, and backgrounds. COMMFFEST outreaches primarily to newcomers which includes immigrants, refugees and communities that are affected by poverty, gentrification, civil rights and trends in community living.
“I am honoured to headline the opening ceremony of COMMFFEST and lead the presentation of awards to the deserving filmmakers. Toronto is known for TIFF but should also be known for the great local talent and stories told through grassroots filmmakers. As the Newcomers Advocate on Toronto City Council, I am proud to support an arts organization that showcases the voices of our newcomer communities,” said Councillor Karygiannis.
COMMFEST presents a broad range of local and international films representing current affairs and relevant issues that affect our society. The festival provides opportunities for emerging filmmakers, artists, musicians and global community stakeholders to express themselves freely to connect with audiences on a more personal level.
“COMMFFEST celebrates the social and creative diversity of Canadian and international filmmakers. I commend COMMFFEST founder, Sandie De Freitas, for her tireless work in organizing this festival and for her outreach to newcomer communities. I encourage all Torontonians to visit the festival and enjoy the experience,” concludes Councillor Karygiannis.
