August 27, 2017 – Moldovian Independence Day

I want to express my best wishes to the Canadian Moldovian Community as you celebrate the 26th Anniversary of Moldova’s Independence

Each August 27 commemorates the day the Republic of Moldova adopted the Declaration of Independence from the Soviet Union.

Moldova became fully independent from the Soviet Union on December 25, 1991. The following day, the Soviet Union ceased to exist. Declaring itself a neutral state three months later, on March 2, 1992, the country gained formal recognition as an independent state at the United Nations. In 1994, Moldova became a member of NATO’s Partnership for Peace program and also a member of the Council of Europe on June 29, 1995.

Toronto is a proud multicultural city that embraces a wide variety of cultures and faiths.  Our city flourishes because of the diversity of people who have chosen to make Toronto their home. As we celebrate Canada 150 this year, it is important to recognize each and every community that plays a part in enhancing Toronto’s social and cultural landscape.

As the Newcomer’s Advocate with the City of Toronto I strongly believe that we must work to together to promote togetherness. We must Respect our newcomer communities. We must Accept our newcomer communities. We should Celebrate our diversity and Embrace our different cultures and traditions, because we are all part of the human RACE.
