July 6, 2017 – Congratulations to retiring teacher Mr. David Pollard of Kennedy PS
On Thursday, July 6th, 2017 I was honoured to officially recognize Mr. David Pollard at the meeting of Toronto City Council and joined with Mayor John Tory to present him a scroll for his service in teaching.
Many residents in Ward 39 know Mr. Pollard well. He entered retirement this year after serving for an amazing 50 years as a public elementary school teacher in Scarborough, including the last three decades at Kennedy Public School.
Dave is an institution. In his years of teaching he saw great changes in north Scarborough. He started teaching primarily Greek and Italian immigrant children and retired from an elementary school that is almost entirely East Asian. He is a trusted face in all communities.
Dave was awarded the 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Elementary Teachers of Toronto. In years past, he has been nominated for the Diamond Jubilee Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Premier’s Award for Teaching Excellence. A fun fact: He started teaching in 1967, Canada’s Centennial year, and retired from teaching this year, in Canada’s sesquicentennial year!
Teaching is a vocation close to my heart. I have five daughters; all are teachers. The work that teachers do to instruct, to care for and to inspire our young students is truly inspirational. Mr. Pollard is most deserving of his retirement after his lifetime of distinguished service to his community, and I wish him well.
