May 12, 2017 – City of Toronto to host third annual Newcomer Day Monday, May 15, 2017 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m Nathan Phillips Square
On Monday, the Toronto Newcomer Office will host Toronto Newcomer Day at City Hall and Nathan Phillips Square. Mayor John Tory will welcome newcomers to Toronto and celebrate their contributions. He will be joined by Laura Albanese, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, Councillor Jim Karygiannis (Ward 39 Scarborough Agincourt), the City of Toronto’s Newcomer Advocate, and Councillor James Pasternak (Ward 10 York Centre), Chair of the Community Development and Recreation Committee.
Toronto Newcomer Day will include a community citizenship ceremony on Nathan Phillips Square held in partnership with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada and the Institute for Canadian Citizenship.
Date: Monday, May 15 (rain or shine)
Location: Nathan Phillips Square and Toronto City Hall
11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. – information fair and family-friendly activities
12:30 to 1:30 p.m. – formal program including Proclamation of Newcomer Day by Mayor Tory, official remarks and musical performances
2 to 3:15 p.m. – community citizenship ceremony
Nathan Phillips Square and City Hall will be alive with a newcomer artist marketplace, an information fair, tours of City Hall, an antique fire truck, speakers’ corner, roaming storytellers, gardening and other family-friendly activities. More than 50 community agencies and City divisions will be on hand to share information and resources available to help newcomers settle in Toronto.
