March 17, 2017 – St. Patrick’s Day
I would like to take this opportunity to wish Canadians of Irish heritage a Happy St. Patrick’s Day.
St. Patrick’s Day is a cultural and religious holiday that is observed on March 17th, the date of the Patron Saint of Ireland’s death. March 17th is a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Newfoundland and Labrador. The day is marked by church services and the lifting of Lenten restrictions.
The Irish, members of the Irish Diaspora throughout the world and those who want to be Irish for a day also celebrate with parades and the “wearing of the green”. Saint Patrick is said to have used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity. As early as the 17th century, shamrocks and green ribbons were worn on St. Patrick’s Day.
