March 11, 2017 – Purim
I would like to take this opportunity to extend my best wishes to members of the Canadian Jewish community on the occasion of Purim.
The holiday of Purim symbolizes the defiance of a people against racial and religious persecution and oppression. The spirit of the holiday is in keeping with the Canadian values and traditions of human freedoms. Canadians of innumerable heritages help to foster this identity and strengthen the fabric of our society. In this particular case, the community comes together to celebrate the Jewish people’s fight for the most fundamental of human rights – the right to exist.
Canadian citizens, regardless of their racial, ethnic or religious background, have an equal voice and opportunity to participate fully in Canadian society.
