April 17, 2016 – Myanmar New Year
It is with great pleasure that I wish the members of the Burmese Canadian community a Happy Myanmar New Year. “Min Ga Lar Nit Thick Par”.
The Buddhist festival of Thingyan is celebrated for four to five days, culminating on Lunar New Year’s Day.
Every year, from April 13 to 16, the water festival of Maha Thingyan is celebrated in Myanmar and by Burmese communities around the world. It is a celebration of change and renewal, with the water being used to wash away the previous year and begin a successful new one.
It is a source of great pride for Canada that its communities continue to celebrate their religious and cultural traditions so far from their homeland. The Burmese community adds to the cultural mosaic of our country and helps uphold our embrace of multicultural values.
Our city flourishes because of the diversity of people who have chosen to make Toronto their home. Toronto’s diverse communities share and celebrate their cultures and traditions with residents in every corner of our city.
As a city proud of its multiculturalism, each and every community plays a part in enhancing Toronto’s social and cultural landscape.
