Karygiannis concerned about Uber recruitment of new Canadians as Uberx drivers
TORONTO – Jim Karygiannis, Councillor for Ward 39, Scarborough-Agincourt, has written to community organizations, which assist in the settlement of new Canadians, warning them that Transportation Network Company in Canada (also known as Uber) are possibly recruiting new immigrants as drivers.

“New immigrants are eager to find employment so they can look after their families.” said Mr. Karygiannis. “They want to become active members of Canadian society. Uber is taking advantage of them.”
Uber contacted a number of settlement organization requesting meeting space on the organization’s premises and thus urging them to advise their clients of the meeting and employment opportunities.
“Uber is telling these people that all they need is a valid driver’s license, proof of Canadian work eligibility; vehicle registration and valid vehicle insurance showing their name. People are being told they can earn large sums of money driving for Uber.” Mr. Karygiannis stated. “However, Uber is not advising them that they will be breaking the law and could be charged by municipal by-law officers. Uber is taking advantage of people who may not understand Canadian laws.”
Canadian Insurance companies are on record indicating that insurance issued for privately operated vehicles would be invalid is the vehicle were used to transport paying passengers. In Ontario, in order to legally operate any vehicle one must have proof of valid vehicle insurance.
“Uber is misleading prospective drivers when it asks for proof of valid vehicle insurance. There is a big difference between vehicle insurance used for personal use and insurance for vehicles used for commercial use.” Mr. Karygiannis commented. “Uber does not advise prospective drivers that their personal vehicle insurance will not be valid if they are in an accident when they are operating as an UberX driver. In case of an accident, this will leave the driver responsible for all damages related to the accident.”
