August 19, 2015 – Afghan Independence Day
I would like to take this opportunity to extend my best wishes to members of the Canadian Afghan community on the occasion of Afghan Independence Day.
Independence Day is observed on August 19th to commemorate the signing of The Treaty of Rawalpindi, on August 8, 1919, between the United Kingdom and Afghanistan, after the Third Anglo-Afghan War. Under the terms of the treaty, the United Kingdom recognized Afghanistan’s independence, agreed that the British-Indian Empire would never extend beyond the Khyber Pass and stopped British subsidies to Afghanistan.
Afghans mark Independence Day by celebrating their rich cultural heritage – a love of poetry, classic art and paintings by visiting heritage sites and historic landmarks.
