Motion re: OVO Fest hosted at the Muzik Nightclub on the Exhibition
MEMBER MOTION NOTICE OF MOTION
Request for a detailed report from the General Manager of Exhibition Place with respect to banning the OVO Fest after party and similar type events from Exhibition Place grounds in the future and examining other permitted uses currently in the tenant’s (Muzik Clubs) lease – by Councillor Jim Karygiannis, seconded by Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti.
Councillor Jim Karygiannis, seconded by Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti, recommends that:
The General Manager, in consultation with relevant City staff, to report to the October 23, 2015 Board of Governors meeting on:
- The ability to ban the OVO Fest after party and similar type of events from taking place on the Exhibition Place grounds in the future.
- Examination and outline of other permitted uses currently in the tenant’s (Muzik Clubs) lease, to see if they can operate the venue by holding other types of events which are more business and family oriented in nature.
Given the recent tragic events which took place at an after party for OVO Fest hosted at the Muzik Nightclub on the Exhibition Place grounds, I believe, as members of the Exhibition Place Board of Governors, we should be closely examining the types of events we allow to take place in City owned buildings.
The OVO Fest has been surrounded by violence for the last two years and should no longer be held on the Exhibition Place grounds. Clearly, the presence of the Toronto Police officers and dozens of private security personnel, hired by the tenant, were not sufficient to protect the public from this violent criminal attack. Regardless of the tenant’s advance planning work with Exhibition Place staff and Toronto Police to provide a safe and secure venue, unfortunately, it failed, with drastic consequences.
