April 12, 2015 – Hindu New Year
I wish to take this opportunity to extend best wishes to Canadian members of various Diaspora celebrating the Hindu New Year.
The festival of the Hindu New Year is known by different names and celebrated at different times of the year, according to local custom. People in the southern Indian states of Karanataka and Andhra Pradesh observe ‘Ugadi’, while the Maharashtrians celebrate their new year ‘Gudi Padwa’. This festival has deep meaning and significance for all those who share in it.
Our city flourishes because of the diversity of people who have chosen to make Toronto their home. Toronto’s diverse communities share and celebrate their cultures and traditions with residents in every corner of our city.
As a city proud of its multiculturalism, each and every community plays a part in enhancing Toronto’s social and cultural landscape.
