January 26, 2015 – India Republic Day Statement
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Canadians of Indian heritage as they celebrate India Republic Day.
On January 26, 1949, the Constitution of India was adopted, marking the transition of India from a British protectorate to a Republic.
Republic Day is remembered as the time when India finally realized the dream of Mahatma Gandhi and others who fought and sacrificed their lives for the independence of their country. In India, this national holiday is celebrated with parades and cultural programs reflecting the rich diversity of the country.
Over the years, I have traveled to India many times and have had the privilege of attending Republic Day observances. This is a very significant time in lives of all who celebrate.
I have worked with, and will continue to work closely, with the Indian Diaspora in Canada on issues important to the community.
